Boxing – Danny Garcia v Shawn Porter
Saturday 8th of September 2018 – Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York.
American welterweights Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter face-off on Saturday the 8th of September for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) World Welterweight Title. The fight will take place at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York.
Both fighters have a points loss to the former WBC welterweight title Kieth Thurman, who vacated the title in April due to ongoing injury rehabilitation but remains the champion in emeritus. In Garcia’s case, this was his only loss to date by split decision. Porter also has a loss to British welter Kell Brook by majority decision which many thought Porter had won.
Despite Garcia’s solitary loss, he has looked beatable in many of his other fights, struggling to beat Robert Guerrero, Lamont Peterson, Mauricio Herrera, Brandon Rios, Erik Morales and Ashley Theophane. Many – myself included – believe he was very lucky to get the nod against Herrera and Peterson.
Porter needs to careful of Garcia’s left hook, which is a showstopping punch in the Philadelphia natives arsenal. However, Porter also has a wide variety of shots which can cause damage and is known for his work rate and pressure. Garcia has a solid chin but he can be hurt to the body, which could be a key to victory for Porter.
Porter will need to cut off the ring if Garcia back peddles, and get in close while avoiding the power shots. Use his roughhouse tactics, and grind Garcia down.
Garcia needs to get rounds in the bag early or try to gain Porter’s respect with some power shots. If he starts slowly, the fight might get away from him early. Garcia’s timing is a level above his opponent who can become ragged with volume.
Betting Odds and Picks
Outright Match Odds
Danny Garcia 1.67 (Paddy Power)
Shawn Porter 2.45 (Betfred)
I believe this match is more even than the odds currently suggest, with decent value in Shawn Porter at 2.45.
Method of Victory
Both fighters have some decent firepower, with Garcia being the harder puncher of the two. A knockout is always a possibility with such fighters, but both have been in the ring with bigger punchers and not been stopped.
I am leaning towards a Porter win by decision.
Shawn Porter by decision or technical decision 3 (Betstars)
