England play Spain on Saturday in the newly formed UEFA Nations League.
The competition is designed to remove pointless friendlies form the international calendar and incorporate them into the European qualification process. How this league will pan out in the long term, only time will tell. Internationals are not my preferred betting market, and rather than looking for something to bet on for the sake of it, it is sometimes just to sit it out. However, I believe there is value with Spain in this match.
England v Spain – The Betting Angle
England had a great world cup and far exceeded everyone’s expectations. They were gifted an easy draw to the semi-final, and when they came up against decent teams in Belgium and Croatia, they lost three from three. They did play better than we have seen England play for a long time. In recent times, we would have expected England to tank even with this favourable draw. They have some players that really stood out in the three lions shirts, including Harry Kane who won the world cup golden boot, Harry Macguire, and Kieran Trippier to name a few.
Spain were massive underachievers in the world cup, going out in the last 16 to Russia on penalties. However, you will have to go back to Euro 2016 to find their last loss in open play. The sacking of Spain manager Julen Lopetegui days before the competition was due to start could not have helped their world cup chances. They looked out of sorts, and even David De Gea who was in incredible form for Manchester United, was making uncharacteristic mistakes.
Ex-Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has taken over the helm of the national team, and has indicated an end to Spain’s possession-based style. This maybe helpful in moving the team forward with their current squad, most of whom play more direct football at club level.
England v Spain Odds and Picks
England have been overrated somewhat due to the world cup run, and English betting money can always skew the market.
I believe there is value in this match with Spain which is why I am backing Spain to win draw no bet at 2.04 on Smarkets.
